Historical Forms, Contemporary Myths
Gabriel Kline & Anja Bartles

5-Day Workshop
May 29- June 2
Monday- Friday 9:30am- 4:30pm

As humans, we all develop personal mythologies. These help us relate to the world around us and to each other. We fill our story with characters that enchant or revile us, inspire us to seek higher meaning, and serve as reflections of our own experience. We find meaning in their anecdotal wanderings, their struggles, and their triumphs. Their stories become parables in our own lives, offering us laws to abide by, bend, or even break. In this way, we are able to uncover more of our own truth.

As ceramists, we are also inspired by and connected to the potters who came before us. In this workshop we will examine the construction methods of several masterpieces of classical pottery from the Greek, Chinese, and Peruvian traditions and analyze the way these pieces reflect the culture that created them.

We will then focus on decorating them with images representing modern or contemporary myths, both personal and communal. Techniques taught in this workshop will include team throwing, assembling large pots in sections, stamping and stenciling, sgraffito and mishima, and digital projector image transfer.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Tuition: $610 + $75 Lab Fee

Fong Choo
Demystifying Form: Clay Play And the Teapot
Fong Choo

5-Day Workshop
June 5- 9
Monday- Friday, 9:30am-4:30pm

The study of form has always been a core interest in Fong Choo's career as a studio potter. For nearly 20 years he has focused - consciously and meticulously on a single form, the teapot.

Why? Because the teapot arguably is one of the most challenging and intriguing forms in clay. Learning it is a life-long endeavor and passion for Fong. Aspects of the form abound: appendages, lids, spouts, lugs, body and handles must all merge as one in order for the piece to be visually pleasing.

At this workshop, Choo will explore and demonstrate the hand building and wheel thrown work required to begin delving into your own fascination with the teapot form. Participants will develop a perspective on proportions from the large to the small, while the nature of "play" within this whimsical form will always be in the foreground.

Throughout the workshop there will be demos on how each part of the piece is formed along with discussions on the how the many facets of the teapot can be aggregated into an aesthetically pleasing whole.
